In July, the Calcasieu Parish Parks and Recreation Department will celebrate Parks and Recreation Month with two special “Movies Under the Stars” events.
The theme of this year’s National Parks and Recreation Month - “Get Your Play on” – is a reminder to residents of the importance of play and exercise and how much local parks have to offer the community.
Bring your blankets and snacks to Prien Lake Park on July 7 to watch Jellystone Park’s two scheming mischief-makers, Yogi and Boo Boo, in their latest adventures in 2010’s live action/computer animated comedy “Yogi Bear.” Yogi and his sidekick, Boo Boo, have hatched countless schemes to pilfer park visitors’ picnic baskets, but Ranger Smith usually manages to foil their plans. But when Mayor Brown announces his plans to sell Jellystone Park to loggers, Yogi, Boo Boo, and Ranger Smith join forces to save their campground (Rated PG).
Then on July 14, find out what happens when the clueless and accident-prone Ernest P. Worrell takes a job as a fix-it man at a summer camp for troubled boys in the 1987 classic “Ernest Goes to Camp.” This juvenile slapstick comedy chronicles Ernest’s campaign to get promoted to camp counselor. Along the way, he ends up causing all kinds of comical chaos but in the end, he winds up helping many of the campers (Rated PG).
Both shows start at sundown - close to 8 p.m. - but get there early to get a good seat.
Residents are also encouraged to take selfies at the events and post them to the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury’s Facebook Page or on Twitter.
In addition, the National Recreation and Park Association is celebrating the month by hosting a weekly contest encouraging people to show them why play is so important in their lives. Visit www.nrpa.org/July for more information on how to participate. Entries can be submitted via the hashtag #NRPAPlayChallenge. NRPA also encourages all people that support parks and recreation to share why they think play is so important with the hashtag #PlayOnJuly.
