The Public Health Services Department was formed in 2021 by organizing the Departments of Mosquito Control and Animal Services under one public health umbrella department. This move is in recognition of how the functions of both departments have shifted over the years, along with the CPPJ’s heightened focus on other factors that can impact the health of Calcasieu Parish residents. 

The Public Health Services Department helps frame each service as a public health benefit for the community and provides oversight to its joint mission of keeping Calcasieu Parish residents healthy and safe through core functions and services, such as operating the Calcasieu Parish Animal Services and Adoption Center, spaying and neutering, and mosquito spraying.

As a new department, there are some challenges but also opportunities. in further defining its mission, optimizing its organizational structure, standardizing policies and procedures, and identifying other relevant functions within the Police Jury government around which the department can align.

The department will also be able to take advantage of shared resources and cross-training opportunities to maximize internal efficiencies and provide additional career mobility for Police Jury staff.
