Calcasieu Parish Mosquito and Rodent Control, which is now part of the umbrella department of Public Health Services,  was established in 1975 with the passage of a 10-year parish-wide property tax to fund the program. The tax has been renewed 4 times since its initial passage, assuring the continuation of this vital service to citizens.

• Mosquito Control covers 1080 square miles - the topography of the parish ranges greatly with salt marshes in the south, upland forests in the north and a great variation in between. Two major river systems with cypress-tupelo swamps traverse the area, one of which is a deep-water port from the Gulf of Mexico. Agriculture also plays a major role in the community with rice and cattle being two of the main products.
• This wide range of topography means that mosquito habitats are plentiful, supporting over 50 different mosquito species. Mosquito Control employs 18, full-time and approximately 35 seasonal employees. Operations encompass all of the major components of a comprehensive control program including mosquito surveillance, disease surveillance, larviciding, adulticiding, source reduction and public education.
