In an effort to educate and involve community leaders in the fight against litter in Louisiana, Keep Louisiana Beautiful and twenty-six affiliates, including Keep Greater Lake Charles Beautiful-Team Green, will participate in a statewide litter-a-thon on March 23, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. This event will end with a press conference in Baton Rouge when Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser will announce the results at 2 p.m.
The event gives local leaders the opportunity to demonstrate their support for keeping Louisiana beautiful by leading the charge against litter in our community. Local government officials along with business and community leaders will join Keep Greater Lake Charles Beautiful-Team Green across the one mile route on 12th Street between Enterprise and Hodges Street. They will be collecting litter in an effort to beautify the area in support of the City of Lake Charles and volunteerism.
Leaders will sign a pledge board confirming their commitment to SPEAK UP and spread the word that litter is not acceptable; to PICK UP litter whenever they see it; and to STAND UP and lead the way for a litter-free Louisiana. The pledge board will become a traveling display appearing at different locations where other leaders and citizens can sign the pledge, engaging even more individuals and extending the impact of Leaders Against Litter.
Over the past four years, nearly 2,000 of our state’s leaders have taken part in Leaders Against Litter, a combined effort that has removed over 25,000 pounds of trash and 16,494 cigarette butts from our state’s roadways and green spaces. Even more importantly, these leaders have pledged to take an active role in caring for their community by taking a public stance against littering, and working with the local affiliate for a cleaner community.
The event will kick-off the Great American Cleanup held in the months of March, April and May. Members of the community can become involved by calling 491-1481, emailing blake.trahan@cityoflc.us or by visiting www.cityoflakecharles.com/recycle to learn about other upcoming events, volunteering opportunities, and various cleanups.
