MOVIES UNDER THE STARS: “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed:”

“Movies Under the Stars” is back in October with four frightening, but family-friendly, flicks. The movie series -- which will feature a teen’s adventure in a magical fantasy land, a good witch’s quest to save a town from evil forces, a realtor and his family’s eerie adventures in a haunted house and a groovy group’s attempts to solve a “monster” of a mystery -- will begin Friday, Oct. 1.

Movies and dates, locations:

  • Friday, Oct. 1 – “The Wizard of Oz:” In this 1939 classic, Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) and her pup, Toto, are magically transported via tornado to the Land of Oz. There, the duo makes some new friends and they all embark on an adventure to meet with the Wizard of Oz to ask for his help in sending Dorothy back home to Kansas. (Rated G). This movie will be shown at Prien Lake Park, 3700 West Prien Lake Road, Lake Charles.
  • Friday, Oct. 8 – “The Haunted Mansion:” While on a family vacation, a realtor named Jim (Eddie Murphy) and his wife and children stop at a creepy mansion that Jim is being asked to sell. They soon discover it is haunted, and the ghostly inhabitants need Jim’s help to break a curse (Rated PG). This movie will be shown Prien Lake Park, 3700 West Prien Lake Road, Lake Charles.
  • Friday, Oct. 15 – “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed:” In this live-action, computer-animated sequel, the legendary Scooby-Doo and his pals Shaggy (Matthew Lillard), Velma (Linda Cardellini), Fred (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar) find themselves embroiled in what looks to be yet another supernatural mystery (Rated PG). This movie will be shown at Mallard Junction Park, 599 August St., Lake Charles.
  • Friday, Oct. 22 – “Halloweentown:” When a young girl (Kimberly J. Brown) learns she is a witch from her good-witch grandmother (Debbie Reynolds), she and her siblings travel to Halloweentown to help their grandmother save the town from evil forces. (Rated G). This movie will be shown at River Bluff Park, 543 Theriot Road, Moss Bluff.

 

All movies will start at 6:30 p.m. Be sure to get there early to get the best spots. Residents are encouraged to bring their own blankets, lawn chairs and food, but there will be vendors present at every movie. Also, free popcorn and cotton candy will be served at each event.

Movie-goers are also invited to wear family-friendly Halloween costumes to each movie.

Movies will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather. Cancellations will be announced before the event on the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury’s website at calcasieuparish.gov and on CPPJ’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages.
