If you’re thinking of buying a home, then don’t miss the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury’s “Building Tomorrow Together” Homeownership Fair, which will be held from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at the Allen P. August Multipurpose Annex, 2000 Moeling St., Lake Charles.
The Louisiana Housing Corporation will give a presentation at 10 a.m. on its Resilience Soft Second Loan Program – a program offered for first-time homebuyers to cover the affordability gap between the maximum amount that homebuyers can afford and the purchase prices of the homes.
It is specifically designed for residents with annual household incomes at or below 80 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI). AMI for Calcasieu Parish, based on household size, is as follows:
- One-person household- $42,850
- Two-person Household- $49,000
- Three-person household- $55,100
- Four-person household- $61,200
- Five-person household- $66,100
- Six-person household- $71,000
Other program benefits include a soft second loan of 20 percent of the purchase price – up to $55,000, and as much as $5,000 for closing costs. And if the homebuyer occupies the home for the full, ten-year term, the soft second loan will be forgiven.
“June is the celebration of National Homeownership Month,” said Maxcine Fontenot with the Police Jury’s Housing Counseling Agency. “Potential homebuyers should attend to help them make informed decisions with the homebuying process.”
“Purchasing a home can seem daunting,” said Alyssa Hebert, Human Services supervisor. “The CPPJ Housing Counseling Agency’s team of HUD-certified counselors can assist with budgeting, credit building, and guidance throughout the entire homebuying process.”
In addition, local agencies, including mortgage lenders, insurance agents and realtors, will be on hand at the event to answer any questions.
