Community Leaders Participate in Keep Louisiana Beautiful’s
“Leaders Against Litter” event
Calcasieu Parish Police Jury officials joined other city and parish leaders on Friday to take a stand against litter.
Thirty bags- an estimated 450 pounds of trash - along with 3,080 cigarette butts, were collected by 60 community leaders and volunteers at the fifth annual “Leaders Against Litter” event, hosted by Team Green SWLA and Keep Calcasieu Beautiful.
Calcasieu Parish Police Jurors Calvin Collins, Shelly Mayo, Dennis Scott and Hal McMillin - along with several other parish leaders, put on their neon vests and rubber gloves and picked up trash along a one-mile route on 12th Street. Others participating included Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter, Iowa Mayor Carol Ponthieux, Lake Charles City Councilmen Mark Eckard, Johnnie Thibodeaux and Stuart Weatherford; School Board members Mack Dellafosse and Damon Hardesty; and McNeese President Dr. Daryl Burckel and Vice President Dr. Mitchell Adrian.
Twenty-six affiliates (including Team Green SWLA and Keep Calcasieu Beautiful) participated in the statewide litter-a-thon on Friday, March 23, concluding with a press conference in Baton Rouge at which Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser announced the results.
Community leaders collectively signed a pledge confirming their commitment to SPEAK UP and spread the word that litter is not acceptable; to PICK UP litter whenever they see it, and to STAND UP and lead the way for a litter-free Louisiana.
The pledge board is now a traveling display appearing at different locations so that other leaders and residents can sign the pledge, extending the impact of the "Leaders Against Litter" initiative.
Leaders Against Litter is a signature event created by KLB - and supported by the Lieutenant Governor’s Office and Volunteer Louisiana - that gives local leaders the opportunity to demonstrate their support for keeping Louisiana beautiful by leading the charge against litter in our community. The Leaders Against Litter events kicked off the Great American Cleanup held in the months of March, April and May.
