Two Calcasieu Mosquito Pools Test Positive for Saint Louis Encephalitis Virus

Mosquito Control reminds residents to wear repellent at all times when outdoors

Post Date:09/21/2018

Calcasieu Parish Mosquito Control received confirmation from the state on Friday that two of the parish's mosquito pools have tested positive for Saint Louis Encephalitis Virus (SLEV).

Like the West Nile Virus, SLEV is a virus transmitted by mosquitoes that can cause inflammation of the brain. Most people who get infected with SLEV have no symptoms, or only mild, flu-like symptoms.

As a result, Mosquito Control will be conducting additional treatments in the areas where the mosquitoes tested positive for the disease.

A reminder to all residents to always  use mosquito repellents and if able, wear long sleeves and pants, when going outdoors - especially at dawn and at dusk. Also,  make sure to dispose of or drain any water holding items around your home.
