Home MenuPrograms and Services
These are some of the many programs that Animal Services provides:
Breed rescue
There are thousands of Breed Rescue Individuals and organizations in the United States. Many work with their local animal control shelters and humane societies to save as many purebred animals as they can. Most of the people involved in these types of endeavors are volunteers and are not listed in your phone book as such. Calcasieu Parish has cooperative programs established with many of these types of groups.
For more information regarding a specific type of animal, you may be interested in contacting the Adoption Coordinator at Animal Services at 337-721-3730, your local veterinarian or run a search on the Internet for "Breed Rescue Organizations" and branch out to specific listings as they show up on the search listings.
Spay/Neuter Voucher Program
Calcasieu Parish Animal Services has developed a spay/neuter program to help people in financial need to spay/neuter their pets. This program helps eliminate unwanted litters that will overpopulate Calcasieu Parish and end up at shelters.
This program was started in 2005 with funding assistance from Petco, PetSmart Charities, the Marin County Humane Society, Humane Society of the United States, and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, along and with matching funds from the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury. The program has now evolved into being fully funded by the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury.
To receive a spay/neuter voucher, you must meet income income requirements, or be enrolled in college with a current schedule or already be enrolled in some form of public assistance.

Simply bring proof of assistance and your government-issued photo ID to the shelter during regular business hours and fill out a brief application. Upon approval, the staff will then issue a voucher and schedule an appointment with a participating clinic of your choice. The price will vary depending on which clinic you choose.
At a minimum, all pets must be current on their rabies vaccinations and Calcasieu Parish licenses. Some participating clinics may require additional vaccinations. If the animal is not current, you will be required to get your pet up-to-date. Most veterinarians will allow residents to pay for and get their pets updated while they're at the clinic for surgery. If your pet is already current, please bring that information with you when you fill out the application so the staff can include it on the voucher.
VOUCHERS ARE LIMITED TO FIVE PER HOUSEHOLD IN A 12-MONTH PERIOD.
People who need assistance outside of Calcasieu can call SPAY USA at 1-800-248-SPAY (1-800-248-7729).

Animal licensing
Can you guarantee your dog will never become lost? Someone could leave the gate open, the leash or tether line could break, or a number of things could happen. Your dog cannot tell people his address - but an identification tag can!
A license I.D. tag is a must! It's not only the law, but it's the basic protection your pet needs. In addition, a tag with your own personal name, address and phone number is even more protection.
People are more apt to rescue a lost dog that has a license and personal tag, knowing that the dog has an owner who cares. A dog can be returned immediately when found, avoiding the delay which can happen over weekends, after-hours, and on holidays when the Animal Services Licensing Agency is closed.
Microchipping
Follow licensing with the latest technology by having your pet microchipped by your veterinarian. Tags can fall off or be taken off. All animals are scanned if they ever arrive at the Calcasieu Parish Animal Services & Adoption Center, as well as any veterinarian's office or rescue!
