Yield SignThe primary objective of the Traffic Engineering Department is to ensure the proper traffic control devices are in place on parish roads for the safety of drivers and pedestrians.

Traffic control devices include signs, pavement markings, signals, flashers, and other related devices that help enhance usage of parish roads. These devices help warn the public of unexpected conditions, give guidance to destinations, and advise of regulatory conditions along the parish roadways.

To determine the proper traffic control devices are used on the roads, various traffic studies are conducted to ensure that they meet the national standards set forth in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Having uniform traffic control devices assists road users, law enforcement officers, and traffic courts by giving everyone the same interpretation. Federal law requires that all public agencies be in substantial compliance with the MUTCD.
