The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury Human Services Department is launching a new volunteer program for seniors over 55 years of age to connect them with a vast array of opportunities across the parish.
Mission: To provide local human services programs and opportunities for individual and community involvement that will engage more people more effectively in volunteer service to help solve social problems.
Goals:
• Design project-based volunteer opportunities that reflect the long-term volunteer involvement. (Arts & Humanities, Public Defender, etc)
• Explore volunteer position sharing and team volunteering options when developing projects. (exhibits at special events, staffing events, etc)
• Think creatively about projects that could be done by groups of volunteers at various times throughout the year. (health fairs, workshops, children’s museum, etc)
• Create short-term, high impact project we can create that will make use of the skills adults have accumulated in their work lives.
Desired Traits in a volunteer:
• A Sense of Humor
• Organization or leadership skills
• Interest in or personal connection to a cause
• Positive attitude
• Flexibility
• A heartfelt desire to serve
Residents who would like to start volunteering with the group and provide suggestions for future projects are invited to come to the first two meetings to be held June 18th and July 2nd at 10a.m. in the Allen P. August Multi-Purpose Annex on 2000 Moeling Street in Lake Charles.
