You should have your septic system inspected at least every 3 years by a professional and your tank pumped as recommended by the Louisiana Department of Health (generally every 3 to 5 years).

The following tips will help to ensure your mechanical sewer system functions properly.

1. Keep detailed records of your ATU, including the model’s name, capacity, installation date, contract service                          agreements, service visit records, and maintenance performed.

2. Conserve water to prevent overloading the system. Repair any leaky faucets and toilets and make use of water-saving       features on appliances.

3. Redirect other sources of water, such as roof drains, house footing drains, and sump pumps, away from the ATU.

4. Familiarize yourself with how your system operates. Recognize how it should look, smell, and sound when functioning      properly.

5. Do not permit anyone to park or drive over any part of your system.Garbage Disposal Limits

6.  Contact a licensed sewer contractor for any repairs or alterations to your ATU.

7. Do not attempt to clean or perform maintenance on any sealed ATU components.

Refrain from flushing or pouring any chemicals into your system.

Dispose of disinfecting wipes and other items in the trash, and not the toilet. These wipes and other items do not break down in sewer or septic systems and flushing them can damage your home’s plumbing and the mechanical sewer system. This can lead to toilet clogs and sewage backups into your home or neighborhood, which pose a threat to public health.
